Dance is a constant flux of new information and inspiration, making the process of creation challenging and equally exciting. In my work as I continue to learn and grow, I hold the values of Exploration, Release, Experimentation, and Ingenuity and the heart of what I create.
Exploration encourages the childhood wonder I wish to hold in my lens by finding new pathways and limits. Extremes, minimals, and in betweens can be brought forth by playing with gestures, motifs, fluid feelings, wringing motions, and exhaustion. Playing within a world of story and adventure bring out the excitement of new possibilities.
Release as a facet of my work allows for the emotional and therapeutic connection I want to feel while moving. Release provides clarity and connection with new ideas to embrace sensation, feeling and transparency. Negativity cannot thrive in a space surrounded by those who embrace the free flow of ideas and the abstract. Moments of reverie and self exploration come through to enlighten the dancer ans audience.
Experimentation pushes what dance can and cannot be and what we can use to achieve a given goal. The influence of other cultures, dances, the environment, and what is provided in a space can ultimately shape how a finish product is delivered. Taking time to acknowledge the roots forming my perspective: concert ballet and modern. Informing and arming myself with an open mind to try new styles, or having the courage to try music, props, lighting, or audience perspective out of my confront zone excites and encourages me to push beyond what was conceived before.
Ingenuity, finally, represents the strive to be more and stand for more. So many experiences and perspectives make up what an individual or the world brings to the table. Being open and inviting to what is provided from the world and those around me can swell a wealth of new ideas and collaboration for everyone impacted by the process of dance.
Exploration, Release, Experimentation, and Ingenuity feeds the fire that lights what I can create.
